A big reason so many people struggle with diet and exercise is because the majority of diet and exercise books have overcomplicated the real issues.

For years, the bodybuilding, protein-gorging community has maligned collagen for its inessentiality and lack of input into the muscle-protein synthesis process. From their perspective, it sort of makes sense. Why bother with “low quality” protein like gelatin/collagen when you can pound the whey, eat the meat, and focus on other sources of the essential amino […]
For today’s edition of Dear Mark, I’m answering some questions from the comment board of last week’s collagen post. You guys came up with some really interesting, useful ones that deserve closer examination. First, I explore whether—and how—increasing one’s collagen intake could conceivably worsen a person’s lipid profile. There’s actually a possibility, believe it or […]

Canned beans are a staple to keep in the pantry at all times. Pick your favorite variety and watch how easily and seamlessly this simple and inexpensive food can save your meal. From chili and soup, to burritos and rice dishes, canned beans know how to be the hero of the dinner table — just as long as you know the ins and outs of cooking with them. Here are five mistakes to avoid.

The fitness industry–especially when it comes to muscle building–could learn something from movies. Science is valuable, but so are proven techniques.

With the U.S. celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, it felt like a good week to take up the question of compassion. There are many variations of Vietnamese beef stew, but what they all have in common are intensely aromatic herbs and spices. Star anise, cinnamon, lemongrass, cilantro, mint, basil…these ingredients turn beef stew into a vibrant meal, rather than a bland, beige bowl of meat. Those herbs and spices don’t just smell good, though. There’s a […]

I’m in the habit of picking up a can of tomatoes every time I head to the grocery store, but I hardly amass more than two or three cans. Inevitably, I’ll come across a recipe that calls for canned tomatoes and, lucky for me, all I have to do is stroll to the pantry and pull them out. This recipe from Jamie Oliver provides a compelling reason to always keep canned tomatoes on hand if you don’t already — and that reason comes in the form of a rich tomato and red pepper pork stew.

You would think your kitchen sink is relatively clean, considering the number of times per day you use it. But simply letting water run down the drain throughout the day just won’t cut it with germs and bacteria — you need to sanitize!

While I’d love to cook with fresh herbs all the time, it’s not always feasible. Between the occasional lack of practicality, the lack of availability (hello, mid-January), or last minute cooking, sometimes dried herbs are a more convenient choice. And, when used correctly, dried herbs can be your secret weapon to making a seriously flavorful dish.

Another semester of my RD program starts today (well, technically tonight). For the most part, I’m excited for new courses and a busy schedule (I get the most done when I have the most to juggle). What I don’t welcome is having less time to cook: the nicest thing about this winter break has been little baking breaks, […]

Canned tomatoes are good for a quick soup, marinara sauce, or blender salsa, but they’re also capable of a whole lot more. On their own, canned tomatoes are a simple and inexpensive ingredient, but when put to work, they can help you pull together some impressive and incredible dishes.

Letting go of our dreams can be scary, but it can also be the beginning of a wonderful new chapter full of infinite possibilities.

When I decided to take the plunge into veganism, I anticipated some pitfalls. I thought I’d maybe lose my cool and dive headfirst into a pile of cheeseburgers, or maybe sneak some brie at a party. But the hardest part of going vegan hasn’t been cravings, which are surprisingly few and far between. For me, the social ramifications of going vegan were far more discouraging. As someone whose social life has more or less revolved around food for the past several years, the feeling of isolation that resulted from my dietary change hit me really hard.

We get excited about mixing colors just like the next person — but sometimes, the perfect thing for a particular room is just one single hue. All of these rooms are dominated by a single color, sometimes in varying shades, which results in a look that’s rich, textured, and even luxurious.

Classic Sherlock Holmes Movie

Today we are adding a great movie that we think many of you will enjoy.  Please let us know what you think.

Dressed To Kill

Classic Sherlock Holmes with what many regard as the best ever Holmes, Basil Rathbone, in the lead role. In this great film Holmes sets out to discover why the villains, including an attractive woman, are so keen to obtain three seemingly trivial music boxes.

I inherited my love of avocados from my mom. When I was in high school, she showed me how to prepare one for guacamole: carefully whacking the pit with a hefty blade, twisting to remove, and then cutting a grid pattern into the flesh before scooping with a large spoon. From there: mash, mash, mash.

The task never bothered me — avocados are so delicious that the semi-annoying way that they exist is just kind of … well, fine, I guess. The extra time to slice, pit, and dice a bunch of the gator-skinned goodies before friends arrive for Taco Tuesday? Totally worth it.

But, no more. It turns out that the secret to super-fast avocado prep lies in an unassuming tool you already own.

Not so long ago, I was watching an episode of a “Top Chef” spinoff show, “Top Chef Duels,” in which canned salmon was one of the ingredients featured in a “high-end and humble” cook-off between chefs. The chef tasked with using it said the only thing she could think of to “save” the salmon was turning it into a mousse with smoked salt, so it might taste more like smoked salmon. Wolfgang Puck, the judge, sniffed the open can of fish and recoiled violently, like he’d been slapped in the face. I was disgusted, too — but not by the salmon.

Canned fish is not at all cool. but it is nutrient-dense and shelf-stable, making it a great choice for busy cooks and shoppers. It’s also genuinely delicious, especially used in salads, crisp seafood cakes, pasta, and more. And it’s cheap — a whole lot cheaper than a fillet of fresh or frozen fish, and that’s where the snobbery comes in.
